Years ago, I remember having a conversation with a friend about her secret to raising amazing boys. Whether or not she knows it, she inspired me. Her boys were able to converse with adults, were well versed in a variety of activities, and seemed to be headed down the right path. Her oldest son, Daniel, played for us during our wedding ceremony.
I asked her what the secret was. Immediately and without hesitation, she answered, "swimming.'" It was not the response I thought I would hear. She felt that swimming taught them life lessons. They learned about discipline, hard work, dedication, physical fitness, personal performance, team effort, nutrition, and how to swim. What's the saying, 'sink or swim?' Just recently, I saw our boys talking with a dad that was watching his son practice baseball in front of our house. The dad seemed to enjoy the conversation. At one point, one of the boys gave his younger son one of our ride on toys to play with during the practice. They were being young men, interested in someone else and what they had to say. Taking care of others, while enriching their lives with experiences. As I peered out the window, I smiled and reflected on that conversation years ago. While our boys don't swim, they wrestle; a similar sport that is teaching them all the same things her boys learned from swimming. While I know we have a ways to go and will always be 'raising' our boys, I think we are on the right track. As for 'Mo's' boys; they are both making names for themselves in the music industry.
