Time has a funny way of sneaking up on you. Years ago, I remember William toddling around the house and my Dad mentioned, "One day, he is going to be back in those woods, looking around, exploring."
The woods are several acres of brush filled forest. Most evenings, a mob of deer quietly emerges, especially during winter. A sly fox or two have made the woods their home for years. These two, our sons, have tip toed around the edges for years, never daring to go deep into the brush. And in an instant, things changed. "We are going to the woods," William announced. So we let them. We let them be boys, explorers, hunters, fearless, and brave. We didn't give them a time to come home, check in, or a list of things not to do. It was a letting go moment, filled with trust and belief that they have the knowledge and common sense to keep safe. About an hour later we saw them in the valley of the woods, returning from their adventure. We let Sydney run through the thicket to be with them. They all returned, proud of what they found. Deer bones from Ben and an antler that William plans to use in his new room. Sydney, proud that she returned the boys to us. Most importantly, the boys were proud. They accomplished something we knew years ago they would. #growingup
