Steve has often teased me that I 'baby' our baby. I deny it . . . but something proved me wrong this evening. During our family dinner, we had the honor of having my mom spend the night. We were discussing nicknames, and Benjamin being the 'baby' came up. Our fun-spirited almost 7 year old chimed in that he is no longer the baby. In my heart, he will always be 'our baby,' but I joked with him that our little furry guinea pig {Abby} is my baby now. My mom even chuckled and said she was about to say the same thing. I adore our animals too! A few minutes later, Benjamin and William left the table. Shortly after, William returned and told me that he was "disappointed in me." Huh? Why is my 9 year old telling me he is disappointed in me? He continues to tell me that I should know better because "Benjamin is sensitive." He was being more serious than normal, and informed us that Benjamin had packed a bag and was leaving. I went to their room and found Benjamin in the fetal position crying. I felt sad that I had truly upset him, but told him that we were kidding and that he will always be our little boy. I reassured him that I loved him and encouraged him to unpack his bag. After a few minutes, he asked if I would help him unpack. He informed me that it wouldn't be that difficult, since all he packed was his stuffed animals. Yup, you read that correct. He was leaving in his pajamas with a bag full of 'loveys.' I resisted in telling Steve since I knew what he would say, however I couldn't. Ensuring the boys were out of earshot, I told him. He cracked up and claimed that this event proved that I 'baby' Ben. He continued by saying if William packed a bag to leave, he would have included a Swiss Army Knife, BB Gun, and some survival tools. Our young MacGyver, I couldn't help but agree. So, he is right. I 'baby' Ben . . . who is apparently growing up to the philosophy of "All you need is love."
